Two girls killed in house explosion buried

By Associated Press, 07/29/02

HOPKINTON, Mass. -- Two young sisters who died when their house was leveled in a what authorities think was a natural gas explosion were buried in the same coffin Monday.

Iris Carey, 4, and Violet Carey, 5, were killed in an explosion last Wednesday that blew that roof off their Hopkinton house.

The cause of the explosion remains under investigation.

It could take weeks or months to determine the cause of the investigation, officials said. There were no signs of rupture along the lines running into the house.

"Now they're beginning to sort through the evidence and see what they can take out for testing," said Jennifer Mieths, spokeswoman for the state Department of Fire Services. "Sometimes those tests can take weeks. They're focusing on the forensic part of the investigation."
