Morning Prayers

The following Prayer - was published on 07/25/2002:

HOPKINTON, Mass. -- Two young sisters were killed overnight
in Hopkinton after a powerful explosion tore through their home.
NewsCenter 5's Jack Harper said that the roof and part of the
top story of the multifamily house were completely blown off the
building and landed on Main Street. Iris Carey, 4, was removed
by firefighters and was pronounced dead at Milford Hosptial. The
presence of gas prolonged the recovery of her 5-year-old sister,
Violet, who also perished in the blast. "On arrival, the fire
department and the police department saw that the house had
collapsed into the street. There were initial reports of five or six
people trapped," Hopkinton Fire Chief Gary Daugherty said.
Daugherty said that there appeared to be a gas leak on one side
of the building when crews arrived at 65 Main St. "One of the
children was removed, almost immediately upon arrival. (She)
was found to be in cardiac arrest. Paramedics attempted advanced
life-support procedures on the child," Daughterty said. Both of the
victims' parents were taken to Milford Hospital for treatment. The
extent of their injuries was not immediately known.

    God of compassion,

    tragedy explodes suddenly
    in small-town summer, and
    nothing is the same. Hold
us as we mourn such loss,
too much to absorb. It is
    so inexplicable; it is so
    close to us.

    Walk with the living through
    dark days ahead. Be solace,
    be companion, be compassion.
    Accompany our human work of
    grief, carving meaning out of
    what feels utterly senseless.

We know none are immune to
    tragedy’s random hand; teach
us to cherish who we have
    in days we are given.

Contain us in our grief, until
you gather us all into fields
of joy where all young flowers
    bloom, with Iris, with Violet,

    			Amen.

    ..
