07/24/02. House explosion on Main Street in
Hopkinton. Ashland responded shortly after initial call came into Hopkinton
Fire Department. C-1, C-2, Engine-2, Ambulance-1, Ambulance-2 and Rescue-1
all responded to assist at scene. In addition, Massachusetts Southern Fire
District-14 Technical Rescue Team (Hopkinton, Southborough, Ashland and
Milford Fire Departments joint team/task force) was activated for collapse
rescue. Despite quick response and superb job by the Team to gain access to
the collapsed sections of the house, two young girls, four and five years
old sustained fatal injuries during the explosion and subsequent collapse.
Suspected cause of explosion is due to gas leak from faulty appliance.
Investigation is on-going.
